Final Idea for an Interactive Web Site

Here's another idea for an interactive web site, I don't know if this is around, but it would be nice to have an application to guide a person through upgrading their computer. I want to make my computer be able to hold more and the people I talked to kept saying that I needed to install this and that and put in a new thingy in the console and wouldn't tell me how to do all this myself. I know I can do all this, I just need a basic step by step instruction manual or web site to help me do this. I don't want to pay someone to do something that I am more than capable of doing myself.

Working with jQuery

This week, we had to create a game using jQuery. When I first saw the assignment title, I was nervous because I automatically thought that we had to create a computer game like Nancy Drew or something. I was pleasantly surprised to see that we only had to create an interactive game of tic-tac-toe. I had an absolute blast creating this. I felt like a computer engineer! I had no idea that I could create something like this and how easy it actually was. It did take awhile for me to get it done, but once it was finished and I clicked on the squares and the x's and o's popped up, I felt awesome. It was one of the most rewarding things I have done in this class. I just wish we had more time to create more things like this.

My Experiance with Making an Interactive Web Page

This week, we worked on JavaScript and it was a lot of fun! Being able to make something that interacts with a user felt very rewarding. I actually squealed after I was able to program the page to say Hello! It was so much fun and I am definitely gonna mess around with this application some more.

Interactive Web Application Idea

I haven't been all over the web, but my idea for a web application would be a site where a person could enter what they ate, where they ate it, how they ate it, and get all the nutritional information on their meal. Usually, if a person wants to get the nutritional information on a meal, they have to search several web sites and sometimes they are bogus or give you faulty information. One site that has all the information would be very handy and help people monitor what they eat.

Week 7 Catching Up Continued..

Well, Dancing with the Stars on Monday was very entertaining. It was rock week and I must say I thought most of them brought their A game. I thought that Kyle and Bristol were most improved and that Brandy totally rocked it! I was sad that Jennifer didn't do better but they can't all be perfect performances. Then, last night's elimination was surprising. Jennifer and Audrina were both in the bottom two! I couldn't believe that two judges and fan favorites were in jeopardy. I was so hoping that Audrina would be the one to go. I found her performances very dull. Lo and behold, she did get booted! I was really surprised. Jennifer is one of my favorites and usually my favorites are the first ones to go! This season so far has been one of my favorites. The only one that surpasses it is the one with Donny Osmond. He totally rocked!

Feedback

Today, I am catching up on my week 7 assignments. That week, we added forms to our web sites for people to rate the website and give us feedback. I was a little apprehensive about this because I was afraid of negativity. I am very happy to report that my classmates are very nice and supportive of each other. My fears were for naught because there was nothing but positive feedback! Now I know my site is not perfect, but all feedback was very encouraging and gave me confidence in doing future projects for this and other classes. Thank you fellow classmates for being so awesome! You are all rock stars!

Finished Moving

Well, I have finally finished moving and am now settling into the new place. I must say that unpacking and arranging is harder than I thought it would be. The new place is the same size as the old one yet it seems like there is not enough room for everything like there was before. If I didn't know better, I'd say that my stuff is multiplying in the boxes. It's almost like being eaten by inanimate objects. No matter how many boxes you unpack, there will always be another one to take it's place. At least the internet is up now and my computer is put together. You never realize how much you use something until you don't have it anymore. Going without the internet was hard! I had no idea I use it as much as I do even when I'm not using it for classes. It's nice to have it again. I'm also glad this move is over. It was brutal! Hopefully I'll have my stuff unpacked before Thanksgiving and before it eats me.

Working with Cascading Style Sheets

This week, we worked with cascading style sheets. I'm not sure why they are called cascading style sheets since they neither cascade or are stylish sheets but that's what they're called. It was fun for the most part. Creating a web site from scratch without any help from a design program was interesting, time-consuming, but still fun. I learned a lot about how to add style (must be where the style in cascading style sheets comes from)to my web pages. I don't know if I would ever actually create a web site this way once this class is done, but I am glad that I now know how to do it old school.

My Idea for a Web Application

Well, I'm not too computer savvy so it's taken some time for me to come up with a good web application. I think a great one would be a wiki you can download to your computer that can give you help with day to day stuff. Say, you've run out of oil and you are right in the middle of baking a cake. You can get on the wiki, ask for oil substitutes, and there it is. Or say you get an awful stain in the carpet and don't have the money for professional cleaning. You get on your wiki and it tells you how to get that stain right up. I know that you can google any of these questions and find the answers, but that takes time. A wiki that has the answer pop right up (and not a bagillion answers like google) I think would be very beneficial and time saving in today's fast pace society. Especially if this app is made available for not only your computer, but every electronic that has internet capabilities. I know this might not be the best web app ever invented, but I would certainly get it.

Using Interactive Web Applications

I think interactive web applications are great to use. I myself have used a few such as facebook, Spanish to English translators, online thesaurus, and my new find, Sumo Paint. Facebook, to me, is only useful in keeping touch with family and friends whom you never see. Other than that, it's just too much. There are too many applications within facebook itself to make it fun for me and usable to everyone. All those games and little extras you can add to your page are just too time consuming.

The Spanish to English online translator is wonderful. I am on YouTube a lot and many of the people I communicate with on YouTube do not have English as a first language. There was one time in particular that a person was trying to tell me something but could not find the right words in English so she told me in Spanish. I don't know hardly any Spanish so the Spanish to English online translator really helped out. Plus, it was free! This application is perfect for someone who doesn't have time to learn another language but still wants to communicate with people who don't know English that well.

Sumo Paint is a new find for me. I was surfing the net looking for a unique web app for my class and I came across it. Sumo Paint is like the regular paint application that comes on most computers, except with a little spice. It has some interesting features and allows you to make many new shapes and designs. This app is perfect for the serious doodler.

This Week's Posts

Okay, usually each week we post one post about whatever we want and the other about the topic of the week. I'm not sure what the topic is, so here is another post on what I want to talk about. Okay, I love Dancing with the Stars. I never watched until Donny Osmond was on last year and ever since I have been hooked. I love the dancing, the behind the scenes stuff, even the judges comments (most of the time). Last week though, I thought that Bruno went too far telling Micheal Bolton he had the worst, whatever type of dance he did I don't remember, in 11 seasons. I mean come on! The worst EVER? That was so not fair! It wasn't great but Kate Gosselin last time was the worst dancer ever! Micheal wasn't good but Kate was worse. I think that Bruno had some sort of personal issue with Micheal. I felt so bad for Micheal's partner Chelsea. She didn't deserve that kind of embarrassment. She worked hard on that dance and then to be told that it was the worst EVER???? There was no constructive criticism in that at all. Lyn used to be the one I loved to hate but Bruno is slowly taking over that position. For Lyn to say that Bruno was to harsh is really telling. Come on Bruno! Judge with discretion and a hint of kindness! I want the Bruno from last year back!!

The Dr. Oz Show

Well, the other day I watched the Dr. Oz Show and he talked about pop. He cleaned a dirty car battery with a can of off brand soda. He then talked about how if a can of pop can clean a battery, what is it doing to our esophagus, stomach, and all the other organs in our bodies. I do have a problem with heartburn and my doc said to cut down on the pop but he never really explained why. I now see that when I drink pop, that burning sensation is caused from whatever is in the pop that cleans the car battery. Kinda scary when you think about it. I have decided to try to cut back on my pop intake but it is much harder than I expected. I like it a lot but I dislike the burning sensation even more. I guess we'll have to wait and see which one wins in the end, the love for pop or the dislike of the burning.

Moving

Well, the past few weeks have been spent packing and the last few days moving. The next few will also be spent moving. It is exhausting! I feel like I am completely losing my marbles! There just is NOT enough time in the day to get it all done! One of my LEAST favorite jobs when moving is cleaning the new place. I mean, you just don't know who has lived there or what they did there. Yuck! Secondly, is actually moving. It wouldn't be so bad if there were not so many stairs to go up and down. It takes twice as long to get anything done just because of the stairs! Thirdly is the packing. It seems like stuff just appears out of no where. You swear you just completely packed up your closet and you go and check and BOOM..at least two more box fulls! It never ends!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (me running away screaming.

My Thoughts of the Effect of the Internet on the Media

The internet has effected the media in many ways. It has newspaper relatively unnecessary except for packing material. A person no longer has to watch the news to find out whats going on in the world. The internet is usually much more up to date on things like this.

The internet has also effected how we watch movies and tv. A person no longer needs a tv in order to watch his or her favorite programs or movies. A computer with internet nicely fits the bill. Most tv stations post their tv programs on their web sites. Also, iTunes usually has a tv show for sale only a day or two after its original showing on tv. iTunes also sells most movies or offers them for rent. Because of these options, a person is now free to watch whatever he or she wants whenever he or she wants.

Internet and Communication

The internet has effected our way of communicating in good ways and bad ways. Most of my family lives in a different state than me and I am lucky if I see them once a year. Through the internet, I am able to keep in semi-constant communication with them. I receive emails, messages, pictures, and video from them through email or facebook. In this way, it makes the separation more tolerable and I don't feel as though I am missing out on anything.

The bad thing about communicating through the internet (via facebook or other social networks) is that it is easy for total strangers to read personal information about you if you are not careful. Identity theft is a real problem because people forget how public some sites are and share just a bit too much information. Some thing are better left off the internet.

Another problem with social networks it that a friend or family member can post anything about you, (a picture, video, or even private information) and not have to ask your permission. I know we all try to protect our privacy, but at some point ,I guess we have to accept the fact that something about us that we don't want shared with the rest of the world will eventually find its way to the internet.

Adding Images to a Blog Post

I love Egypt. It has one of the most fascinating histories and some of the best architecture. I find the pyramids and the temples absolutely beautiful. Here is a picture I found on google search.

Here are links to some of my favorite web sites

You Tube

IMDB -It stands for the internet movie database. It lists almost every movie ever made and all the actors and actresses appearing in each movie.

Kryptonsite- This is a web site dedicated mainly to Smallville but also includes shows like The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural. I am an absolute nerd when it comes to all things Superman.

Links to Other Sites

In this blog post, I am creating links to other sites that you may find interesting.

Click here to go to my neighbor's blog.

I am currently learning how to create hyperlinks. I am learning it at the site annunziato.org.

My Expectations for the course Exploring the Internet

I feel like I know a lot about the internet but it is changing all the time and I want to keep up. So far, this class has exceeded expectations. I expected to make a web site but not a blog. I have never blogged before so this is an interesting experience. I think the further I get into this class, the more I'll realize that I didn't know as much about the internet as I thought I did.

I have never read a blog before and am not really familiar with it in any way. I am on the internet a lot but it's mainly to check my email, look things up on google, or see what events are happening near by that I can attend. I love youtube. I am a youtube junkie. There are so many videos on there that have me in stitches. I usually avoid the comments section though because most of the comments are negative.

Topics to blog about:
Since this is a new area for me, I'm not really sure what I want to blog about. Something that's fun and doesn't require a lot of research. I saw Julie and Julia and that was my first 'experience' with blogging. I think talking about thing we like or things we've learned might be interesting. Or maybe have a how to section. There are so many people in this class, I think that they each one have something that they could teach us.

About Me

My name is Jennifer Johnson and I am currently attending the University of Massachusetts at Lowell via the internet. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's of Liberal Arts degree with concentrations in history and art history. Besides this class, I am also taking Arthurian Literature which, so far, is very interesting. One of my favorite hobbies is learning and collecting things about Ancient Egypt. I have ten books so far and know more than some people but less than others. I want to learn as much about this location and this time period as possible. I haven't picked a kingdom to specialize in yet, but I think that makes learning all the more fun. I am planning on visiting Egypt in a few years and hope to have enough time and money to make a few stops along the way to England, Ireland, and Paris.
